The Medicinal Garden:  The launch of the Medicinal Garden at Fernhurst Surgery took place on Wednesday 1 July, at 6.00pm.  The guests included: Parish Councillors; Dr Alex Higham, GP Partner at the Surgery; Russell Shellard, Owner and Founder of Bramdean Construction, the project's principal sponsor, who provided labour for site clearance and supplied topsoil to help establish the garden; Andrea Webb, Aprimula Design, who planned the garden and sourced many of the plants from local donors; Claudia Vargas, Local Nutritionist and Wellbeing Coach, who advised on the medicinal properties and traditional uses of herbs; Theresa Kennedy, Chair of Fernhurst Horticultural Society and former local midwife, who acted as liaison between the project team and local NHS health centres; Sue and Dave Gibbon, leaders of Fernhurst Cubs, who created natural bee habitats from recycled materials, helping to encourage pollinators and support biodiversity within the garden; Hort Soc Committee and members. The project was conceived by Hort Soc members Hilary Hayward and Linda Lawes, who saw the opportunity to help support the patients and staff at the local GP surgery and transform the garden.

 

It was a fine evening and everyone enjoyed sparkling wine, soft drinks, tasty nibbles and meeting up with each other.  Alex Higham, Russell Shellard, Andrea Webb and Theresa Kennedy gave short presentations to bring the project to life.

 

If you are going to the Surgery, or walking past, do stop and look at the garden with its lovely collection of medicinal flowers and herbs, beautifully labelled, in the neatly edged beds and read the interesting information board.
